Ramsey Castle in Montreal

Another place to visit in Montreal, the Ramsey Castle has seen many time periods that the city went through and evolved with each of them. Before a smart guy says "Ramsey was an Egyptian Pharaon, so it was built by Egyptians." No. This is not the reason why; this castle has no connection with the people of Egypt. Anyways, the castle explores the significant eras that Montreal went through during its growth. There also a temporary exposition that is about the excavation made in Montreal to learn its history.

Part 1 Montreal History

Room 1

The first room is about the very first settlement built in Canada, there is, of course, Montreal but also Hochelaga and Ville-Marie. This room is not the most complete room, but it is nice to start with the roots of the city.

Room 2

It is about the second significant step in the colonization of Canada, the first contact with the Natives, or the Amerindians. This room is turned toward their culture and also the trades between them and the Europeans.

Room 3

The third room presents various influent figures that owned or interacted with the castle. Those figures include Military commanders, a treasury, some nobles and the first council of Huron Chiefs. There is also some house objects that were used, but they are not the primary interest of the room.

Room 4

The fourth room is exploring the members of the very first parliament. It was far from being complete as it was mainly representing the wealthy population, which means the nobles and the merchants only.

Room 5

This room is all about the various conflicts during the Americain revolution. It is presenting some military figures that took part in it and the equipment used by both sides. There are some battles that are introduced but this is not a major point in this room.

Room 6

Next comes the various great changes that occurred in the city. Some of them are the services created like a cruiser and banks ( yes, I know they are not related at all). Some other services innovated are the development of trades or the use of tobacco. Also, there is another list of owners of the castle.

Room 7

This room, just like the previous one, deals with further innovations brought to the city. The most famous one would be the cars and the firefighters. Yes, those guys were not always around extinguishing fires in the town, people had to deal with fires on their own! Another innovation was the winter sports equipment because again like everything they were invented at one point in time, this means that before that they had the bare minimum to play sports.

Room 8-9

The last two rooms are very different because they cover another subject, excavations. The three types of excavations shown deal with the colonist and what they used in their daily life, the first nations and tools used, and finally the defences build around Montreal. In the end, Ramzey Castle, or Chateau Ramzey, is a place not to miss if you are interested in Montreal's past! It effectively provides an excellent overall view of the city's past while remaining simple to understand.
